General Information
Established in Chicago since 1988, we have provided Korean books and music CDs to a large scope of clients ranging from individuals to non-profit organizations: Korean churches, Korean schools, public libraries and so on. We are proud that many people who live in various locations in the Midwest U.S. can read Korean books and listen to music CDs through us.
We have over 30,000 books including most genres: Entertainment& Leisure, Business & Finance, Fiction, Nonfiction, History, Health & Living, Law & Order, Hobbies, Self-care, Special Interest, Religions, etc.
We update with new released books which are bestseller-oriented every two weeks and music CDs every month. Also, when a customer is looking for aspecific book which is not in our store, we always try to have the book for him/her within one month at least.
How to purchase Korean books from Korean Books & Music for the library
There are two options to purchase Korean books or music CDs for the library.
1) The library sets the budget for the year to purchase Korean books and we select books within the amount. It is helpful for us to select books if the
library lets us know the ratio of categories of books.
2) The library selects books from the English catalog that we’ll send by e-mail every month. The English catalog would be simple and would include
transliteration-title, translation-title, author-name, category and price.
However, we strongly recommend the first option because it is simple, fast and easy for both of us. We promise to select only good books not junk books.
Price and Delivery
We are going to provide all books for the library with 20% off the original price. We are going to deliver to the library at no charge.
Tips for selecting Korean books for Korean Patrons
1) Most Koreans who live in the U.S. are immigrants or international students. According to our records, over 90% of Koreans who purchase Korean books are immigrants. They want to be connected to their country, South Korea, and are interested in political issues. For example, the book Chŏlmang ŭn na rŭ tallyŏn sik'igo hŭimang ŭn na rŭl umjiginda (Despair makes me to be trained and hope makes me to move) became a current bestseller because it is written by the first South Korean woman president, Kun-hye Pak, who was elected as the 18th president in 2012. Her father, Chong-hee Pak, was the 5th~9th president of South Korea.
2) You’ve probably heard "ppalli, ppalli” which is Korean language. It means “hurry, hurry.” Generally, most Koreans are diligent, earnest and interested in
success. Therefore, the books about self-care and success stories are always in the bestseller list. For example, the book, Getting More: How to Negotiate to Achieve Your Goals in the Real World which is written by Stuart Diamond, is one of the current bestsellers.
3) According to the results of research from Gallup Korea which is a specialized research company providing accurate and objective social research, the most frequent cause of death in South Korea is cancer. In terms of well-being, many Koreans are also interested in how to release and handle stress. The remarkable change among Koreans is that their favorite topic is moving to “well-being” from “success.” Actually, over 40% of books on the bestseller list in December 2012 were about meditation and healing the mind. Mŏmch'umyŏn, piroso poinŭn kŏttŭl (which means, the things that can be seen only if you should stop) written by Hyemin who is a Buddist monk is still the top seller. Interestingly and ironically, the message of the book is about healing the mind, and to stop being harsh on ourselves to achieve the goal. At the same time, it’s written by a person who has already achieved one of the highest goals that Korean people
admire. Hyemin is a professor at Harvard University.
